Constructing a population database using automated methods – Stockholm in 1955 Researchers in economic history and historical demography have long relied on large micro-level databases to study, for instance, social mobility, fertility, migration, and firm performance. Sweden’s strong tradition of quantitative historical research, combined with its access to high-quality original historical records, has enabled departments to construct various excellent databases, including SEDD and the Historical Manufacturing Census of Sweden in Lund, POPLINK in Umeå, and GOPP in Gothenburg. Yet, assembling such databases is highly labor-intensive, requiring large teams with expertise in handwriting and transcription, and generous external funding. New machine-learning tools are, however, cutting the costs associated with transcribing historical records. With only minor hand compiled training datasets, small teams can transcribe records and assemble large databases in months rather than years. In this presentation, we present the strategies used to construct a new population database, covering everybody living in Stockholm in 1955. We describe the machine-learning method, the original records, and the main challenges that we encounter and how we address them. This presentation discusses seaweeds and archaeology through the SEARCH project (Seaweeds in Archaeology to promote sustainable consumption) led by Dr. Shalen Prado (University of Stavanger). SEARCH aims to develop microscopic approaches to trace ancient seaweed use through multiple proxies such as diatoms, starch grains, and phytoliths. When school, hobbies or public free time activities are far away, depending on area, behind of 10, 20 or even 100 kilometres, young people on those rural areas lack the equal services. Mobile youth work, youth workers on wheels can be one option for the future youth work sector. Going around by cars on the fields of young people’s free time places create new approaches in youth work. Mobile youth work as working method can be labelled under the concept “detached youth work”, that mean doing the work with young people in those various public and semi-public environments where youth hang out. In this type of work the encountering plays important role and the encounters should see as a characteristic method itself. The seminar lecture deals both, the detached youth work, the special type of youth work and its features done in Finland and the theme of periphery / rural youth. Lecture is based on the Mobile Youth Work in Finland Research Project (2021-2022) that was financed by the education and cultural ministry of Finland and carried out in co-operation between Humak University of Applied Science and Finnish Youth Research Society.    Aino Tormulainen, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer and part-time project worker in Humak University of Applied Science. Aino Tormulainen works as a Senior lecturer in Community Ecucator program in Humak University of Applied Science, where community educators are educated. Community educator can work in several different fields building and creating communities. Mainly community educators work in youth work and NGO’s. In Humak Tormulainen has been specialized in youth work field that she teaches and do research and different projects in collaboration with different actors from youth work sectors. She works part time in projects, at the moment she is an expert in Youth Work Centre of Expertise that focus on Equality, equity and non-discrimination in Youth Work. Her background is in girlhood studies and youth studies. The problem with instructions is rarely a lack of information — more often, it is the opposite. When overloaded, students struggle to identify what is important.By analysing your own course communication using established frameworks, you will gain insights into how to reduce cognitive overload and structure instructions in a way that helps students focus and plan.
