Characterization of sludge biochar for agricultural use
Research project
The project aims to enable sustainable recycling of phosphorus through the use of sludge biochar from sewage sludge as a fertilizer and soil improver. With advanced chemical and physical characterization, it is studied how the properties of sludge biochar are affected by sludge origin and pyrolysis process, and how this controls phosphorus availability, environmental risks and plant uptake. The results will support future decisions and regulations for circular sludge management in agriculture.
The project is implemented in four work packages that interact along the entire sludge biochar value chain. Sludge from thirteen sewage treatment plants is pyrolyzed in the pilot plant Test bed Ellinge operated by VA Syd under varying operating conditions. 91传媒在线 is responsible for advanced chemical and physical characterization of sludge and sludge biochar, while plant experiments and extractions are used to assess phosphorus availability at Linnaeus University. The results will be reported as decision-making information for agriculture and the water and sanitation sector.
