I teach primarily on the Environmental Science with sustainability profile program, and do research on how metal contamination affect our ecosystems, with special interest in bird populations.
My scientific interest lies in the field of ecotoxicology, with special interest in metal contaminated environments and potential effects on biota. My research focus on the effects of metals on aquatic and terrestrial environments, with special interest in the transport of elements from aquatic to terrestrial environments, with aquatic insects as mediators, and the direct and indirect effects on terrestrial birds. I am also interested in long-term effects of mining and in particular the recovery in mining-impacted environments. Here we have a holistic approach and use both paleolimnological tools, but also more ecological and ecotoxicological tools. By using lake sediment records we can monitor the historic mining impact in lakes, and by focusing on benthic communities and long term records of bird populations we can monitor the environmental effects.
I’m the program director for the bachelor in Environmental science with sustainability profile. This is a transdisciplinary program focusing on finding long-term solutions on national and global environmental- sustainability- and health issues. In addition, I also teach and am responsible for some of the courses within the program.
